Boxer engines have an odd feel at idle and I'd always assumed mine was just rough due to this factor and expected no improvement. One test I did was to set the cruise at 75 on a hill I often do this on and the tranny has to kick down to hold the speed. My Legacy: First bottle had dramatic effects throughout the powerband, but again most notable at 0-10mph. When you've owned a truck for 140,000 miles I guess you know just how much pressure will hold it in place but the better swirl of the clean valves must provide a bit more torque at these low RPMs. One interesting side effect was that the truck twice moved itself at stop lights when the idle up A/C compressor cycled on. I put another bottle in and the idle is rock steady. My 80: First bottle took 50% off the rough idle, and notably improved the low speed acceleration (0-10mph). It had a rough idle, very distinct flat spots, and weak acceleration from rest at the beginning of the Redline test. I've fed it good gas and Techron annually to its current 50,000 miles. The Legacy I bought with 23k on the clock and suspect it had cheap gas as it was a local rancher's wife's car. Over the years, I've tossed at least 2 bottles of Techron in it out of sheer pity and he has also done it "a couple times". Its engine feels as fresh as mine powerwise, but displays several mild flat spots, poor throttle tip in and a thready idle. His 80 has 280,000 miles on it and has been fed cheap gas all its life. I put a bottle of the Redline in our 80, and as additional date also in my brother in law's 80 and our Subaru Legacy. The engine's condition is excellent - recent plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, etc. Fairly subtle but when you're sitting outside a store waiting for your wife or something with nothing better do to, it becomes annoying after you notice it. It's noticeable when I'm sitting in Park and manifests itself like a single cylinder misfires gently every few seconds in a random pattern. My 80 has had a slightly irregular idle for years - perhaps 5 years now. Redline's marketing claim is that these cleaner additives ALL leave deposits on the valves after doing their work and explain it convincingly. So, you wouldn't think I'd have any cylinder deposits due to this and keeping it in an excellent state of tune. Atop this, I have put a bottle of Chevron's Techron Concentrate in at least once a year - again since new. I was a bit skeptical since I have used Chevron Premium as the primary fuel, and always major brand mid grade or premium when I could not find it since this truck was new. Redline says no need as this issue does not arise with detergents. With solvent, you are getting some past the rings and deteriorating the oil, which is why it's best to change the oil after using them. Another huge difference between this and other "fuel cleaner additives" is that others are solvent based where this is detergent based. Redline's claim to fame with this product is that it is designed not to clean injectors, but to clean the valves and cylinder deposits. Thought I'd wait a bit to be sure of my results before posting this. After hearing so much about Redline's Total Fuel System Conditioner from people whose opinions I greatly respect, I tried some myself a few weeks ago with good results.
